Circus: Poems 30 -- 41

Again the Sister

What will I have to do
To get her?
She has strung my heart

Out tight as a rope
What is my part
In this circus?

I have fallen for her
Where is my safety-net?

A New Performance

Again the mask --
Put on the make-up
For my final flawed

Cracked unbelievable part
Half-man half-monster
Lolling around the ring

Broken weak of heart
Crusader sailing out of port.

New Clown

She spoke in flat tones
Then was shrill
Laughter came next

Circled the ring once
Pushed a man on his face
Fell down sprawled

What sort of clown is this --
Did you laugh?

The Show

Empty out your eyes
They are full of tears --
Anyway what good

Is that? I saw
One trickle down your face
In front of all these people

What for? In this place --
Public as a steeple.

Again the Sister Again

If I could hold her
Maybe then
The world would be alright

So gloomy so deep
So dark so desperate
So smoky so frail

I cannot hold her
The wind blows her away.

On the High Trapeze

One slip and I fall
Do not think of anything else
Hand must grab

The bar that comes swinging --
Life and death --
I am looping through thin air

Breathless now
I can see only heads below.

Clowning

Loosen up
You cannot stay so tense
And still perform

Leave out the pathos
Scream around
Tumble fall flat

Take off your hat
Make a little sound.

Over

What do I want
Now the show is over
New town tomorrow

Who knows -- who cares
Only happiness lasts
Lasting does not matter

Clear silent sobs
Take away your heart.

The Fall

Press your lips to mine
Let me look at you
You are handsome you are fine

My heart has taken a fall
And spills out here
In front of you

Only love can drive me on
To want to do anything at all.

Conqueror

Conqueror of space and time
My heart's mistress
My heart's mind

My wayward dancing girl
My untouchable rope-walker
I have lost all balance

The world spins uneasily
You are my only reference.

Tell me Juggler

Juggler juggler
You throw three balls
So bright so colourful

One is my heart
One is my mind
One is my body

You throw them prettily
What will become of all three?

Animals

Animals in cages
I would let you all be free
But what would you do then?

There is nowhere to go
There is nothing to do
You are proud and majestic

Behind those bars --
You can still be free.

Happy

Birds make me happy
The grass makes me happy
Alone I am happy

Alone I am terrified
The earth opens up
It is full of monsters

Your smile makes me happy
Your touch makes me happy.
